Campaign Monitor - "Send a Test" feature does not work with Magic Links

If you are looking to test the pre-auth login links for an upcoming campaign you should not use the "Send a Test" feature.

The "Send a Test" feature in Campaign Monitor is not useful in most contexts for reviewing a campaign. Many wineries using Offset want to test if their pre-auth login links / Magic Links are working. The "Send a Test" feature does not transmit the customer account tokens needed to test those links.

There are two ways to test these links before sending it to your customer base. Be sure to sync your customer list before testing, as that process will refresh all the unique pre-auth tokens in every customer account.

One:

Use the Preview button. On the campaign Snapshot page, at the bottom is a "To" section where you can "Select Recipients". You will need to select either the full Synced list from Offset, or a Segment within that list. We recommend selecting the "Test Group" Segment as that should only be populated with customer accounts from your admin team. Once you have recipients affixed to the campaign, in the upper right is a "Preview" button. When you click that a screen will appear and the message will pull down sample customers from the recipients you have affixed in the To section. You can then click the buttons in your campaign to see if the links log you in automatically.

***Very Important*** After testing this, do not just X out the browser tab of that customer account. You want to click the Log Out button to close out that session.

Two:
Send an actual Campaign to your Test Group Segment. As mentioned above, you can select your Test Group Segment in the "To" section of the campaign snapshot page. Send an actual campaign to those people in the Test Group and test the links via an actual email.

If you are on a "Pay Per Campaign" pricing plan with Campaign Monitor you can send an actual campaign to five people or fewer and not be charged.

Next, on the Campaigns page, in the Sent section, you can hover over the sent campaign and to the right will be a "Copy" button. That recreates the campaign exactly as it was sent, allowing for set up and use again as the campaign to be sent to customers.

On a side note, if you upload a customer list directly to Campaign Monitor, pre-auth "Magic Links" will not work that way either. You need to send campaigns through the "Synced" list from Offset, either to the full list or via Segments.
